Why raw food is better for our animals
Raw diet
A raw diet mimics the way an animal would feed in the wild as it contains higher protein levels than most standard commercial pet foods. Feeding your dog or cat a raw food diet is not a new fad, in fact this could not be further from the truth. Raw and balanced meals that contain quality meat, fish and poultry combined with bone and offal is exactly what canine and feline species need to thrive.
A raw diet is sometimes known as a BARF diet, which stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food.
Our products include complete meals, complimentary meals and also treats which include bones and a variety of animal and fish products.
The benefits include:
- Balanced energy levels
- Glossier coat
- Less wind
- Healthier poo
- Supports the immune system
- Supports digestion
- Improves dental health
- Full of protein.
Feeding working dogs a raw diet
Feeding working dogs a raw diet is becoming more popular with improved education about what our dogs need for health and wellbeing.
This model of feeding is based on the principles of evolution nutrition.
It is important to vary a dog’s diet to ensure maximum nutritional benefit. Just like humans, working dogs need variation in their diet to ensure it is balanced. Ingredient selection will depend on your dog’s age and activity level.
Raw meat
Raw meat is one of the richest sources of complete protein. It provides all the amino acids our pets need for healthy muscle growth and function. Amino acids are also vital for a healthy liver and immune function.
Raw Bone
Soft, raw edible bones should form part of a raw diet. They are rich in calcium and nutrition due to bone marrow, collagen, glucosamine, and chondroitin, all responsible for healthy bone and joint function.
Other healthy ingredients
To boost your dog’s diet and as a treat, you can add small amounts of extras such as, salmon heads and sprats.

Whether you’re new to raw feeding or just new to Southcliffe, here are answers to some of the questions we get asked the most.
What is in Southcliffe minces?
100% natural goodness! We use human grade meat, fish and poultry with absolutely no nasties, fillers or artificial flavourings.
Why is a raw diet better for dogs and cats?
Southcliffe raw meals are full of the nutrients that dogs and cats need to thrive. Raw food is exactly what a canine and feline digestive system is designed to thrive on.
What are the real benefits for dogs and cats to eat raw diet?
Your pet will have noticeable better oral hygiene, improved digestion, as well as having a noticeable better coat and skin. You are also likely to notice a reduction in bad odours from both ends and their stools will be firmer and easier to collect for disposal.
Are the raw mince packs a complete meal?
Southcliffe Foods produces two ranges of minces, the Complete range is as the name suggests, a complete meal in itself. Our standard meal range is a complimentary meal and other foods can be added to it or served with it.
Can I buy Southcliffe products if I’m not a trade customer?
We have a large number of dedicated retail stockists and raw specialists across the UK that are happy to help and support you as well as provide our products. For this reason, we believe in supporting them and that it would therefore be unethical to sell directly to the public. Please visit the ‘stockists’ tab to find your local store.
Does Southcliffe have a range of treats that owners can feed their pets as well as the main minces range?
Yes, absolutely! We have a fantastic range of premium quality frozen and dried treats available.
Are there any fillers or artificial flavourings in Southcliffe raw meals?
Absolute not!! We take great pride in only including healthy and nutritious ingredients in our meals that will enable dogs and cats to thrive.
What does ‘single source protein’ mean?
Single source protein means that all the ingredients in the pack are from the animal species that is specified rather than from a variety of animals. Most raw food manufacturers charge extra money for single source protein meals, at Southcliffe Foods we do this as standard!
What does 80, 10, 10 mean?
This refers to the balanced ratio that is in the pack. The optimum balance in a complete meal for dogs and cats is 80% meat, 10% offal and 10% ground bone.
